Sinhala, Muslim participation in Tamil genocide remembrance answers IC detractors

A section of Sinhala and Muslim students took part in the Mu'l'livaaykkaal Genocide Remembrance organised by the Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU) on Wednesday and a group of Catholic Sinhalese from the South were also present at St. Paul's church at Mu'l'livaaykkaal. At Mannaar, Muslim representatives were present at the memorial event organised by ITAK Youth Wing leader V.S. Sivakaran. The Sinhala-Muslim participation sends message to International Community and UN actors refusing to accept genocide. The very first monument to be erected in remembrance of those who perished in Mu'l'livaaykkaal was also sculpted by a non-Tamil in the island, although the identity of the artist could not be revealed. The statue, having artistic significance has been silently put up near the St. Paul's church by the Tamil villagers of Mu'l'livaaykkaal, news sources in Vanni said.

However, the occupying military of genocidal Sri Lanka deployed a large number of Sinhala military intelligence operatives armed with cameras with the intention of documenting participants with video and photo evidence and at the same time using the exercise to suppress the Eezham Tamils from paying tribute to their fallen freedom fighters.

The extent of harassment by the camera-armed military intelligence operatives was exposed when they attempted to forcefully enter the premises of Uthayan paper and photograph the media workers, who were taking part in a inside the paper office. The security guards at the paper office took the camera-armed personnel into their custody and produced them at the police station, where their affinity to SL Military Intelligence was revealed.

Braving the hurdles from the SL State and its military, the political, civil and grassroots activists in North successfully marked Mu'l'livaaykkaal Day in the Northern province.

The main event was held at Mu'l'livaaykkaal organised by the Northern Provincial Council amidst 30 - 40 SL military intelligence were taking photo and video of the participants. Politicians and grassroots activists had come from Eastern province and from South to attend the main event.

Meanwhile, the event organised by Jaffna University Students Union, proceeded without military harassments. The SL military intelligence was actively blocking the event in the past years. The relatively peaceful environment within the university premies also facilitated the participation of Sinhala and Muslim students, the JUSU leaders told TamilNet.

Jaffna University Teachers' Association and the union of non-academic staff extended support to the JUSU-organised memorial event by cancelling the lectures and other activities for 2 hours.

A memorial event was held in the evening at the ITAK office in Jaffna.

In Mannaar, Ilangkai Thamizh Arasuk Kadchi (ITAK) Youth Wing leader V.S. Sivakaran, who is also the chairman of the federation of public associations in the district, organized the district-level remembrance event at the Urban Council hall. Mr Sivakaran was recently detained by Colombo's Terrorist Investigation Division and released on surety bail within 24 hours.

Ms Pathmini Ketheeswaran, who lost her husband in the genocidal onslaught garlanded the main image and lit the flame of sacrifice. Biruntha Santhirasegaran, the only surviving child of a family slain in the genocidal onslaught, lit the first candle.

Former TNA parliamentarian Vino Nokarathalingam, former members of civic councils took part in the Mannaar event.

TNA parliamentarians and former members of civic bodies took part in the prayer and memorial event observed in Ki’linochchi town.

Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) organised a memorial event with Hindu and Catholic priests at Mu'l'livaaykkaal. TNPF's President Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, General Secretary Selvarajah Kajendren were present with other representatives of the TNPF as well as the civil society. The survivors of 2009 Vanni genocide took part in the event, which was held at the sea shore of Mu'l'livaaykkaal at 3:30 p.m. The TNPF had organised a similar event at Vaakarai in Batticaloa.

However, the SL military intelligence operatives were taking photos and videos of all the people who took part in the events. The local villagers who attended the events, the participants who came from outside, those who organised the events, the people who contributed to the arrangements and those who presided the various events were watched by the camera-armed military operatives wearing in civil clothes.
