Colombo proceeds unabatedly with military, STF deployment in Batticaloa

The ‘Defence Ministry’ of genocidal Sri Lanka has instructed the District Secretariat of Batticaloa through the SL Ministry of Public Administration and Management in Colombo to permanently transfer the ownership of the lands belonging to the Divisional Secretariat office of Eruvilpattu South at Ka'luvaagnchik-kudi. The STF units, formed during the times of late SL President J.R. Jayawardene and trained by the British, were further strengthened by his successor, the late SL President Ranasinghe Premadasa. The STF camped at the premises of DS office in 1990 is still stationed there despite the end of war in Batticaloa in 2007. A torture chamber is located inside this notorious camp where several Eezham Tamils abducted by the white-van squads in the past, have been subjected to ‘enforced disappearances’. Ka'luvaagnchik-kudi is located about 30 km south of Batticaloa on Kalmunai road.

The people of the area have been repeatedly demanding to the dismantle the STF camp.

There are several other public places where SL military and the STF continues to be stationed.

The occupying Sinhala military is still stationed at Kurukka'l-madam Kalaivaa'ni Viththiyaalayam (school) in the same Eruvilpattu South division.

At Paddip-paazhai division, the SL Police is still occupying the building of Teachers Centre.

Tamil officials at Batticaloa District Secretariat said there is a sharp increase of instructions coming from the SL ministry in Colombo to transfer the ownership of lands that remain occupied by the SL military, STF and the police.

The STF, trained by the British, is a full-fledged military outfit under the SL Police Department. However, the STF functions as an extended arm of the SL military receiving instructions from the SL Defence Ministry in Colombo. The STF was directly engaged in brutal acts of genocide in the East as well as in Vanni during the war.

After the genocidal onslaught in May 2009, Colombo has been stepping up the deployment of the notorious STF commandos in all the districts in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

There are currently more than 8,000 STF personnel attached to 69 camps, most of them situated in the occupied country of Eezham Tamils in the North and East of the island.

Pill Miller, a researcher for UK-based Corporate Watch, who gave expert witness on the British complicity in Colombo's genocidal war against Eezham Tamils at the Peoples’ Tribunal on Sri Lanka, has brought out two reports titled, ‘Britain's Dirty War against the Tamil people 1979 - 2009’ (2014) and ‘Exporting police death squads From Armagh to Trincomalee’ (2015), which have been published by International Human Rights Association - Bremen.
