White-van abductions continue in North with ‘UNP sophistication’

White-van abductions continue in North with ‘UNP sophistication’

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 30 December 2015, 21:42 GMT]
Sri Lankan military intelligence is operating white-van abductions through diaspora and homeland based intermediaries, a well-informed right activists in Jaffna told TamilNet on Wednesday. There have been at least three cases in the recent weeks where abductions were carried out in the Northern Province. The affected parties were given death threats if they chose to go public through other channels than the intermediaries through whom they were released after abductions. The targeted people were Tamil journalists, family members of diaspora activists and traders.

None of the affected people were prepared to come open. If they went open, their kith and kin were at the risk of losing their lives in ‘accidents’ or through ‘engineered’ gang violence, they were told by the intelligence wing interrogators.

While abductions take place, the intermediaries swiftly take contact with influential individuals in the family of the victims to convey the message that they should not make any complaint to media or human rights groups.

Some of these intermediaries are linked to the United National Party (UNP). There are also personalities associated with Tamil diaspora organisations among these intermediaries.

The SL military intelligence has established a sophisticated network across several countries in the West through deceiving Tamil diaspora ‘activists’ who visit the island through Colombo.

Apart from the three cases cited by the human rights activist, there are also reports of SL military intelligence harassing a group of reporters attached to a Tamil website in recent days and a case of a Tamil trader abducted by a white-van squad and subjected to interrogation by the SL military intelligence on bank or money transfer related transactions with diaspora Tamils. The victim, upon release, has left Jaffna on the advice by the ‘intermediaries’, the sources further said.

The editorial board of Thinakkural daily in Jaffna was threatened by SL military intelligence operatives on 09 December 2015 for publishing a story exposing the activities of ‘journalist moles’ operated by the SL military in Jaffna.

41 of the 44 journalists subjected to assassinations and killings in the island are Eezham Tamils. None of these killings have been properly investigated.
