SL military deploys clustered-houses for Sinhala colonisation in Jaffna

The occupying Sri Lankan military, which has fenced off several thousands of acres of lands belonging to Eezham Tamils and have bulldozed the public and private buildings, has now started to put up clustered houses, says Deputy Chairman of Valikaamam North Piratheasa Chapai (PS) Sageevan Sanmugalingam, who is also the president Valikaamam North Uprooted People’s Welfare Society. The people who have visited their properties along the line of the fence, which has been put up from Vasaavi’laan West to Achchuveali, also confirmed the report. SL military deployed clustered houses are visible from the fence bordering the occupied Sinhala Military Zone (SMZ) in Valikaamam North.

The clustered houses in Valikaamam North reminds the people of the 5,000 houses that were put up by the SL military in Mu’rika’ndi to launch a Sinhala military colony in Vanni, Mr Sageevan has told journalists in Jaffna on Tuesday.

The roofing material also looks similar to Chinese-donated roofing material used by the occupying Sinhala settlers elsewhere in Vanni, he says.

While the Sri Lankan judicial system was delaying the processing of cases filed by Eezham Tamils against the seizure of their lands, the SL military has completed demolishing the buildings inside the occupied area amidst civilian protests.

The area was demarcated as so-called High Security Zone during the war. Later, the SL military cleared landmines and the SL government promised that these lands were to be released to the public to resettle. However, the area was fenced off and seized in 2013 by the occupying SL State through Gazette notifications. Violating its own rules and regulations, the SL State also carried out a large-scale surveying of these lands.

After the seizure of their fertile lands, the uprooted Eezham Tamils from Valikaam North have been continuously harassed by the US-trained ‘counterinsurgency’ commander of the SL military in Jaffna Maj. Gen. Udaya Perera, to accept ‘alternative’ settlement in barren and quarry lands with clustered-houses.

The poverty-stricken uprooted Eezham Tamils still living in the so-called welfare centers are being forced to accept alternative lands in KKS quarry area and in Vazhalaay, where the earth is of greasy or slippery nature not suitable for agriculture.

The SL military is also scheming a township in the occupied SMZ. The Sinhala township will be encapsulating the strategic port, airport and military installations that have been occupied by the SL military.

Eezham Tamils in Jaffna peninsula fear that they would be isolated into pockets of Tamil settlements as the Palestinians find themselves today in their occupied land. Eezham Tamils have already been isolated into pockets in the Trincomalee and Ampaa'rai districts in the Eastern Province.
