Eastern province under flood again due to torrential rain

Several low lying areas in the districts of Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Ampaa'rai and Polonnaruwa are under flood due to the ongoing torrential rains lashing since Monday. People residing in low-lying areas are displaced and seek shelter in public buildings. In the Batticaloa district alone 210 villages in 14 Divisional Secretariat divisions; Vellaave'li, Paddippazhai, South Eruvilpattu, Vavu'natheevu, Kaaththaankudi, Ma'nmunaipattu, Ma'nmunai North, Ea'raavoorpattu (Chengkaladi), Koa'ralaippattu, Koa'ralaippattu North, South, West and Central are under floodwaters.

Fishermen in coastal areas from Matara to Trincomalee have been warned agaist going to sea for fishing due to the movement of heavy wind following a depression in Bay of Bengal.

75 villages in the divisions of Poththuvil, Akkaraippattu, Kalmunai, Paalamunai, Chammanthu'rai, Kaaraitheevu, Ninthavoor, Addaa'laich-cheanai, Naavithanve'li, Thampiluvil, and Thirukkoayil are under floodwater, disrupting normalcy.

Those displaced from Ampaa'rai district are staying with their relatives and friends.

Ten villages including Ea'raavoor, Thamaraikkea'ni, Aiyangkea'ni, Michnagar, Meerakea'ni, Chiththaa'ndi, and Vanthaa'ru-moolai are completely under floodwater, forcing the people to displace to other highlands.

In Trincomalee district 15 villages including Trincomalee, Ki'n'niyaa, Verukal and Thoappoor have been affected by flood. Transport services in the province have come to a halt due to adverse weather.
